General Report on St Zoe Primary and Secondary Schools by Andrew SSempijja February 2009

Start of Term Report for St Zoe's February 2009

These two reports give a lot of detail about the Primary and Secondary schools. The schools are about 3 hours to the west of Kampala in a very rural area where subsitence farming goves most of the people their livlihoods. We are aiming to help develop life skills for the children so that they can help themselves and create an enterprise culture.

St Kizito's

  • We have over 470 primary age children at this school and we are helping them to develop their own plans for its future. When we have their ideas we will share them with all supporterd

The Good Shepherd School

A vision and some planning ideas for the future of Good Shepherd School

  • Children born with disabilities have a tough time in much of Africa and the developing world. Even where the parents keep the children the chance of them getting any education is very slim. The chance of getting the special help which these children need is remote. And children can be pretty unkind to those who are not fully able.  Add to this the fact that for poor people it is very hard for them to see any real value in sending children with special needs to school assuming there is one they could get to.
  • The Banyatereza Sisters who work in Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya are our partners in Fort Portal and they have built the school and are running it. We opened with 25 children and by March 2009 this had risen to over 30.
  • Dr Pat Scampion, a UK Paediatrician has visited the school on two occasions and has carried out a very detailed review of special needs children in the Fort Portal area. Her ideas of creating an outreach approach to the families of these children is part of our longer term plans.
  • The school farm provides much of our food and the site has fresh water but rather minimal toilet provisions at present.
