KAGOMA EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION (ST. ZOE'S CAMPUS) In the summer of 2008 we met with the parents and village leaders and reviewed the success of St Zoe's Primary School in the 6 years since it had opened. See link left for the history and for school reports etc. The discussion was focused on what was the most important thing to do next. The answer was unanimous. With 80% of qualified primary school leavers denied a chance to get into the one secondary school in the area, parents knew that the chances of advancement for even the brightest children were nil. Also there are no vocational schools in the area. On June 2nd 2008 we decided that we would support the building of a secondary school and vocational institute. A week later we heard that the parents and villagers had already started to clear the site in preparation. We commissioned an architect to do the site layouts and designs of what will be an 8 year project with a secondary school, a vocational institute, and staff accommodation and a farm large enough to provide food for a site which will have nearly 1000 people in 2016. We built the first 4 classrooms in 2009 and the overall project will cost about £450,000. We are setting very high standards in both buildings and other resources. The plan is to raise funds for this project and at the same time create a bursary fund which can assist those who can go on to obtain higher skills or university places in Uganda or overseas. This is what the campus will look like when complete; (7 buildings are now complete)
GOOD SHEPHERD SPECIAL NEEDS SCHOOL Children with special needs get poor attention or none at all in many parts of the world and this is particularly so in Uganda. When Sr. Theresa Abigaba of the Banyatereza Order told us of her 20 year dream to have a school for children with learning disability in her town of Fort Portal in the west of Uganda, it was her passion for this cause that excited us. In summer 2007 we agreed to make this dream come true, In February 2009 the school opened and it now has 72 children attending. It really is a most beautiful school and has set new standards for all to follow. But there are hundreds of other such children in the region. So the challenge now is "how can we make Good Shepherd a centre to reach out to those children and parents living too far away?" The outreach plans are now being considered and will include the need for transport and more qualified teachers. At the same time complete the remaining buildings needed at Fort Portal. This will mean a capital need of about £50,000 and then some revenue solutions which engage the local people but to which we may need to contribute. This is what Good Shepherd looks like in 2010
