KAGOMA EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION  (ST. ZOE'S CAMPUS)

In the summer of 2008 we met with the parents and village leaders and reviewed the success of St Zoe's Primary School in the 6 years since it had opened. See link left for the history and for school reports etc.

The discussion was focused on what was the most important thing to do next.  The answer was unanimous. With 80% of qualified primary school leavers denied a chance to get into the one secondary school in the area, parents knew that the chances of advancement for even the brightest children were nil. Also there are no vocational schools in the area. On June 2nd 2008 we decided that we would support the building of a secondary school and vocational institute. A week later we heard that the parents and villagers had already started to clear the site in preparation.

By June 2011 the first two blocks have been completed and that provides 6 class rooms and two stores and offices. When term started in February 2011 about 130 children registered and this doubled the number we had in December 2010. This make a big difference because we already had the teachers to cover the full syllabus and now they are being used better.

2010 was a dreadful year for lack of rainfall. As a result we raised money to fund a major expansion of the school water harvesting systems and hopefully this will avoid the need to set off in the school truck to buy water again.

More land was added to the site in Janaury and this takes the total to about 100 acres which will make it much better for both feeding the children and also to develop the Agricultural part of our vocational programmes.

And we are now looking at how St Zoe's can really develop its Sport programmes. We have purchased a lot of kit but now we need to improve the playing field areas. A job for 2011 and 2012.

GOOD SHEPHERD SPECIAL NEEDS SCHOOL

Children with special needs get poor attention or none at all in many parts of the world and this is particularly so in Uganda. When Sr. Theresa Abigaba of the Banyatereza Order told us of her 20 year dream to have a school for children with learning disability in her town of Fort Portal in the west of Uganda, it was her passion for this cause that excited us. In summer 2007 we agreed to make this dream come true, In February 2009 the school opened and it now has 72 children attending. It really is a most beautiful school and has set new standards for all to follow.

By February 2011 the school buildings are almost complete and there are 100 children at the school.

But there are hundreds of other such children in the region. So the challenge now is "how can we make Good Shepherd a centre to reach out to those children and parents living too far away?"

Thanks to the efforts of Dr Scampion, Ed Paulat and his Kilimanjaro Climb we have been able to purchase a vehicle which will allow Sr Theresa to start an out reach programme later this year
